Who do I listen to?

There is much disagreement between the medical profession and the natural health industry as to the necessity of augmenting ones diet with vitamins and/or supplements. Both avenues have their valid points. The caveat here is that both tend toward speaking to the individual need in terms of the average need.

Much of the information one finds is slanted toward the commercial rewards attached to the product being sold.The consumer may often find themselves at a loss of what to believe or who to trust.

When searching for answers much research is called for. Educated yourself on what the available choices are in terms of benefit to ones state of health and to your general well being. It is not prudent to be too trusting when your health or the health of your loved ones is at stake.

It is not wise to simply take the word of a friend or believe a marketing concept. Your health is a very important issue and care must be taken when making choices. The safest approach that one can take on the question of their need to take vitamins and/or supplements is one of education and research.

No one knows your body as well as you do. Medical doctors can prescribe pills for what ails you but if you are not taking proper care of your health, medications too often serve only as a band-aid that may be masking deeper problems. It is also worth considering the side effects associated with many medications.

The latest miracle supplement may sound like the answer to your health issues, however they may be making matters worse. Everyday we hear of the latest miracle discovery that will cure multitudes of ailments and disease. These may give one a false sense of security and are often a waste of money.

So, whom do we believe? The best approach is to become familiar with your own body and to make your decisions based on a whole body concept. True health is one that considers not only physical well-being but includes mental, emotion, and spiritual health as well.

Are you in good physical condition or do you run out of breath when you go up a flight of stairs?

Make a point of establishing a regular regime of exercise. Practice a daily routine that fits with your present state of health and your lifestyle. Don't overdo, this will only set you back and cause you to become discouraged. As they say "Rome wasn't built in a day". Take it slow at first and build up to what feels good to you. Make a habit of checking your heart rate during exercise. Familiarize yourself with what that rate should be at the beginning, middle and end of exercise. If you should experience unusual and prolonged pain, stop immediately and get help. It's always advisable to take your cell phone along with you during outside exercise.

Do you sleep well and arise ready to start the day or do you awaken feeling tired and want to sleep a little longer?

It is a well known fact that most people today feel sleep deprived. This can be caused by a number of factors. If you do not get the recommended 8hrs. of restful sleep each night, over a prolonged period you may subject yourself to a number of very serious issues. You would do well to research what the dangers are and take steps toward correcting your sleep issues. If possible this should be done without the help of medication.

Becoming dependant upon pills to put you in a state of relaxation, is not truly addressing the issue of why you are not resting. The problem might be easily corrected without the danger of becoming dependent on something unnatural. The goal is to awaken ready to face the challenges of the day and for most this is a very attainable goal.

Do you feel nervous and under stress? Is your lifestyle peaceful and conducive to relaxation?

Are you over working? Take time for rest and relaxation, spend time with loved ones, recharge your batteries. This makes our lives more manageable and we finish the day feeling satisfied and often find we are more productive and feel better when our personal life is working well.

If you are out of work and stressed over financial worries, this can take a toll on your state of mind and your physical well being. Find someone who will talk with you about your concerns. An understanding friend can make life seem much less threatening. Do what you can each day toward solving your situation. Staying motivated will make your search easier and will open more possibilities, that might have previously not occured to you. Professional help is always available when you have exhausted all of your possibilities. A fresh prospective may give you ideas that you find very interesting and open new doors for you.

Do you stay involved and are you actively learning new things of interest?

Education and entertainment give life its freshness. New ideas and new approaches of implementing your ideas add zest to ones life. Taking classes in areas of interest or finishing your education can make a world of difference in how we feel both physically and mentally. Volunteering can be a very gratifying way of seeing your life from a different prospective.

Do you take time to enjoy the company of friends and loved ones? What is the quality of these relationships?

The ones we love are what make our lives what they are. Do you have healthy relationships with others? Poor relationships and inability to communicate with others can lead to depression and great unhappiness. Life can seem overwhelming if we do not have others to turn to for enjoyment in life and someone who cares when life becomes difficult.

Take time to tell those in your life what they mean to you. They may be needing to hear that someone care too.

All of these ingredients help to establish a healthy and happy lifestyle. If all of these are in order, or at least most of them, you may find that your feeling of a need for vitamins and/or supplements is minimal.
